(…) The central question of Faust is the one to which is not given and perhaps cannot be given a true answer. It stands eternally at the center of the human experience:
“Do you believe in God?” (…)
— from Luigi Viola’s introduction notes for “Faust erster Teil 13 Fragmente”
Luigi Viola
Feltre 1949. Multimedia artist and teacher in Brera Milano and Venice Fine Arts Academies. Pioneer in the 70s of the Italian video art.
Classical studies and Ph.D. in Literature at the University of Padua.
Co-founder of several art reviews: “Informazione Arti Visive” in Venice, “Creativa” in Genoa, “Artivisive” in Rome, and “Qnst”, also in Venice. He was a pioneer of videoart in Italy.
He started in the early 70s using visual writing, performance and video, winning wide international acclaim for his personal lyrical and narrative interpretation. In the mid-70s, he turned his attention back to painting, but photography has been in any case a constant way of working.
With a ductile approach to the different media, he directs his research on the themes of memory, travel and landscape as places of the discovery of the sacred.
